Sniper Elite 3 is an action-shooter that places players in the shoes of a World War 2 soldier in North Africa. The game is largely based on stealth and sniper assassinations, with a special emphasis on the blood and gore that comes from high-powered weaponry.

If there's a selling point to this game, it's the viscera. While many games feature sniper rifles and blood, Sniper Elite is perhaps the only game to embrace exactly what a high-powered weapon does to the human body. The game is so gory that it's almost played for laughs - the slow-motion, x-ray vision animations that come from a perfect shot would be disgusting if they weren't so over the top. While there's certainly more to the game than taking out Nazis in the most disgusting manner possible, it's that level of gore that really sets Sniper Elite 3 apart from the rest of the crowd.

It's a shame, then, that there's so much more to the game than the kill shots. Any time you're away from the scope is an exercise in frustration, especially when you're trying to be stealthy. This is a game that does one thing very well, but that insists on doing everything else at the same time. It's almost like the game wants to compete with the more successful Call of Duty or Battlefield franchises and sometimes forgets exactly what it is supposed to be.

If you want gore and explosions, this is your game. If you want a full-featured game that will stand the test of time, you need to move on. Sniper Elite 3 should be valued for what it is - a disgusting, gory good time.
